Wise in Israel in 2026: sending dollars or pounds in shekels, the real fees, timing and limits

Wise is the go-to for a one-off transfer to an Israeli account: mid-market rate, fee shown before you send, shekels paid in often the same day. What it really costs, and when to do something else.

The short version

Wise sends your dollars, pounds or euros converted into shekels to any Israeli bank account at the mid-market rate, with a fee shown before you confirm: roughly 0.5 to 0.9% for a typical transfer, less above about $25,000. Money usually arrives the same day. Unlike Revolut, Wise accepts Israeli residents (personal accounts, two Israeli ID documents). It is the right tool for one-off transfers of $2,000 to $10,000; below that Revolut on a weekday is cheaper, above it a broker negotiates better.

Who can use Wise for Israel

From the US, UK, Canada or elsewhere

Anyone with a Wise account in a supported country can send money to Israel, in shekels, to a recipient’s Israeli account (your own, a seller, a landlord, family). That is the most common use: funding an Israeli account before or after aliyah, paying rent, supporting a student child.

Israeli resident

Israel is one of the countries where Wise opens personal accounts (no business accounts for Israeli residents). Sign-up requires two Israeli ID documents: a foreign passport alone is not enough. A resident can then send shekels abroad (supporting family, paying a bill in dollars) and hold balances in other currencies.

Oleh in the middle of moving

Until you have your teudat zehut, keep the Wise account opened in your home country; once settled you can open one as an Israeli resident. For day-to-day spending in the first weeks, the Revolut card is more practical.

The real fees into shekels

Wise takes no margin on the rate: it applies the mid-market rate and charges a visible fee, a variable part plus a small fixed one. The total is shown before you confirm, and the rate is guaranteed for the period stated on screen.

These figures vary with currency, amount and payment method (bank transfer usually cheapest, card dearer). To compare to the cent with Revolut, your bank and a broker, at today’s rate and for your exact amount, use the money transfer comparison.

What Wise avoids

Conversion by the Israeli bank. If you send dollars “as is” to an Israeli account, the bank converts them with a 1–3% margin and charges a receiving fee (often 0.1–0.25%, ₪20–60 minimum). With Wise the money arrives already in shekels: you avoid both.

Sending money to Israel with Wise: the steps

  1. Enter the amount in dollars (or pounds, euros) and choose shekels as the receiving currency: the amount received and the fee appear.
  2. Add the recipient: exact account holder name, Israeli IBAN (IL followed by 21 digits), bank. A name mismatch can block the payout.
  3. Pay by bank transfer from your bank, usually the cheapest option, or by card if speed matters.
  4. Answer any checks: on a first or large transfer Wise may ask for ID or proof of source of funds.
  5. Track the arrival: usually the same day, sometimes the next business day. Israeli banks do not credit on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

From Israel: sending shekels abroad

For an Israeli resident, Wise mostly works the other way: supporting family abroad, paying a bill in dollars, funding a foreign account. You pay in shekels from your Israeli bank or by card; Wise quotes fees from 0.1% on large amounts. Keep the tax side in mind: Americans count Wise balances toward the FBAR threshold (see the US–Israel guide), and olim who arrived from 2026 must report foreign income even when exempt (see oleh tax benefits).

Wise’s limits

  • Not an Israeli account: Wise does not replace an Israeli bank account for salary, sal klita, arnona or direct debits. See which bank to choose.
  • Per-currency limits and checks on large amounts: leave time before a property deadline.
  • No limit orders and no advisor: for a down payment, a broker waits for the right rate for you. The full buying process is on Kinyan Guide.
  • No business accounts for Israeli residents.

What will change in 2027

Two things to watch. Competition first: Revolut’s Israeli launch, expected but undated, and the growth of Israeli digital banks should push conversion costs down on the Israeli side. Then Wise’s own fees, revised regularly up and down: we re-check the grids every quarter in the comparison. This page will be updated with every significant change.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wise work in Israel?

Yes, both ways. From abroad, Wise sends dollars, pounds or euros converted into shekels to any Israeli bank account, often the same day. For Israeli residents, Wise opens personal accounts (not business accounts) with two Israeli ID documents, and lets you send shekels abroad.

How much does a Wise transfer to Israel cost?

Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a fee shown before you send: in practice around 0.5 to 0.9% of the amount for dollars, pounds or euros into shekels, plus a small fixed part, and less above roughly $25,000 (from 0.1% according to Wise). One 2026 example: about $9 in fees to send $1,000 in shekels. The exact price depends on currency, amount and payment method.

How long does a Wise transfer to an Israeli bank take?

Often the same day, sometimes the next business day, once Wise has received your money. A first transfer or a large amount may be held for an identity or source-of-funds check.

Wise or Revolut?

Revolut is cheaper for everyday spending and small amounts converted on weekdays within your plan’s allowance, but it cannot yet be opened from Israel and pays Israeli accounts by SWIFT. Wise is more predictable for a one-off transfer of $2,000 to $10,000: fee known upfront, shekels paid in, and it accepts Israeli residents.

Is Wise suitable for a property purchase?

For part of the money, yes; for a down payment of several hundred thousand shekels, a currency broker is usually cheaper (0.2–0.5% margin), can lock a rate and pays the lawyer or developer directly, with the paper trail the lending bank expects.

Can I receive shekels into a Wise account?

Wise lets you hold a shekel balance and receive international payments in several currencies, depending on where you live. Shekel details do not replace an Israeli bank account for domestic transfers, salary or direct debits.

Is there a limit?

Wise sets limits per currency and applies the lower of the two currencies in a transfer. For large amounts, expect a source-of-funds check. The exact maximum for your transfer shows in the app before you confirm.
