Dollar → shekel converter: today's rate and what to know before you transfer
The reference rate with no margin, a chart up to five years, and the three things that make the difference when you send dollars to Israel.
ECB reference rate, no margin. Banks and exchange bureaus add 1–3% on top.
How to read this rate
The rate shown is the interbank reference rate published every business day by the European Central Bank. It is the "real" price of a dollar in shekels at a given moment, the one banks apply between themselves. No individual gets exactly this rate: every intermediary adds a margin, sometimes displayed, often hidden inside the rate itself. It is nonetheless the only sound baseline to compare two offers: always ask "how many shekels for $1,000" and set the answer against the reference rate of the day.
The margin: the real cost of a transfer
Flat fees are visible; the margin on the rate is not. A "no fee" wire at 3.40 when the market is at 3.52 costs 3.4%, or $340 on $10,000. These are the orders of magnitude observed in 2026 for a $10,000 transfer to an Israeli account:
| Channel | Rate margin | Flat fees | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional US bank (SWIFT wire) | 2–3% | $25–50 | $225–350 |
| Israeli bank (conversion on arrival) | 1.5–2.5% | ₪20–60 | $160–270 |
| Exchange bureau in Israel | 0.8–2% | 0 | $80–200 |
| Online transfer service (Wise, Revolut) | 0.4–0.8% | $0–10 | $40–90 |
| Currency broker (large amounts) | 0.2–0.6% | 0 | $20–60 |
Ranges vary with the amount, the bank and the day. For a property purchase, where sums often exceed ₪500,000, the difference between a bank and a broker runs into thousands of dollars.
For a specific amount, the money transfer comparison applies these schedules to today’s rate and shows the shekels received per channel.
The "yatzig" rate: the one that counts in contracts
In Israel, many contracts are still priced in dollars: rent, off-plan apartment purchases, legal fees. The shekel amount is then computed at the shaar yatzig, the representative rate the Bank of Israel publishes every business day around 15:30. It is very close to the ECB rate shown here (usually within 0.2%), but for a contractual payment, the yatzig of the payment date is what counts. Check it on the Bank of Israel website before writing a large check.
When to convert: three simple rules
- Don't convert everything at once. On a large amount, spreading transfers over several months smooths the risk of hitting a bad day. The shekel has moved more than 15% in twelve months several times in recent years.
- Look at the chart before deciding. If today's rate is near its one-year low, waiting a few weeks can be justified; if it is near its high, now is the time. The converter shows the extremes of the selected period.
- Avoid high-volatility days. Bank of Israel rate decisions, security events, US inflation releases: intermediaries widen their margins on those days.
Ten years of the shekel against the dollar
Over the decade the shekel appreciated: a dollar bought close to 4 shekels in 2015 and around 3.3 to 3.7 in recent years. The reasons are structural: a current-account surplus driven by technology exports, Bank of Israel foreign reserves among the world's highest relative to GDP, and interest rates often above the Fed's. The sharp drops of 2022–2023 and after October 2023 were followed by rebounds. For an American sending dollars to Israel the long-term trend is unfavourable; for someone repatriating shekels to the US it is favourable. Hence the case for not leaving savings indefinitely in the wrong currency.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dollar to shekel exchange rate today?
The converter shows the European Central Bank reference rate, updated every business day around 16:00 CET. It is the interbank mid-market rate with no margin: no individual gets exactly this rate, but it is the right baseline to compare offers.
How many shekels is one US dollar?
Roughly 3.2 to 3.8 shekels over recent years, with sharp moves around geopolitical events. Enter 1 in the converter for today’s exact value, and use the chart to see where today sits against the recent range.
Why does my bank give me a worse rate than the one shown here?
Banks and exchange bureaus add a 1–3% margin on top of the reference rate, often presented as "no fee". On $10,000 the gap between a traditional bank and a specialist service is commonly $150–350. The margin, not the flat fee, is the real cost of a transfer.
When is the best time to convert dollars to shekels?
Nobody predicts currencies, but two rules help: spread a large amount over several months to smooth the risk, and avoid high-volatility days (security events, Bank of Israel rate decisions). The chart shows where today’s rate sits against its recent extremes.
What is the "yatzig" rate and how is it different?
The shaar yatzig is the representative rate published by the Bank of Israel every business day around 15:30, used in Israeli contracts priced in dollars (rent, apartment purchases, legal fees). The ECB rate shown here is very close, usually within 0.2%, but for a contractual payment the yatzig of the payment date is what counts.
Should I convert dollars to euros first, then to shekels?
No. Every conversion adds a margin. If you hold dollars, convert straight into shekels. Routing through euros only makes sense if you already hold euros.
Is transferring money to Israel taxable?
Moving your own money is not taxable income. But Israeli banks ask for the source of funds above certain amounts (savings, sale of property, inheritance), and the Tax Authority receives reports on large movements. US citizens must also report Israeli accounts over $10,000 in aggregate on the FBAR. Keep your documentation.
Why is the shekel considered a strong currency?
A current-account surplus driven by tech exports, some of the world’s largest foreign reserves relative to GDP, and interest rates often above the Fed’s: the shekel appreciated against the dollar over the decade despite sharp drops during crises. That is why a dollar buys fewer shekels today than in 2015.
